Oracle 10g storage on HP-UX (ASM & SGE for RAC)

Hi All,

Oracle 10g support a new storage system called ASM (Automatic Storage Management). It is something like RAW devices for storage (I think) I mean it is not needing any file system. Oracle recommended using ASM in most of its documents for storage. You can setup RAC system with it .So which one is a better solution for storage, using SG extension for RAC or using ASM? Why?
Finally, What is the benefit of using SG extension for RAC? Is it preparing any extra facility?

I am having trouble understanding the relationship between these two products.

The SG Extension for RAC helps you set up a high availability cluster for RAC.

ASM appears to provide you raw disk space to install RAC onto. That raw disk can be used as failover disk in a SG cluster.

Seems like you'd like to use both.

Re: Oracle 10g storage on HP-UX (ASM & SGE for RAC)

Steven

I think we can bypass all the service guard products in 10g enviroment. I test it, 10g solution works BUT I am not sure that it is reliable as much as service guard.
There is something that I cannot understand is it possible to setup all of them with together? What about performance? If ASM acts like RAW device it should has better performance than the SGE for RAC becuase filesystem will be bypassed in ASM. What do you think?

Hi,

ASM - Automatic Storage Management, is an Oracle product to help manage storage of database - it can be used without RAC. You can see more details in: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/index.html

SGeRAC - is a extension of MC/SG to use with RAC - in my case, I use SGeRac to handle lan cards failover. For example, the lan interconnection of the nodes in a RAC environment needs a good lan throughput and also, a stand by lan, because it can be a single point of failure in a RAC cluster. If you don├В┬┤t use SGeRAC, you can configure many lans to cluster interconnect, but without failover

Re: Oracle 10g storage on HP-UX (ASM & SGE for RAC)

Thank you everybody

I have another question about kernel parameters for using ASM as storage.
I found a presentation with title "Best Practices for Oracle on HPUX". On that document Sandy Gruver writes for using RAW device, Choose the asynchronous disk driver (asyncdsk), in kernel driver area.
Does ASM act like RAW device or not ( because it does not need file system)?Should i change this parameter in kernel for using ASM as storage or not?

Hi,

In case you use ASM, all devices will be raw (like disks), so, you can use async device driver without no problem.
