Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i

Has anyone successfully loaded Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i (11.11)? Due to some migration issues we have going from HP-UX 10.20 w/ Oracle 7.3.4, to HP-UX 11i w/ Oracle 8i, our DBA's would like to take this approach. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i

To my knowledge, 7.3.4 is not supported on 11i
That does not mean it will not work, but I suggest you possibly approach Oracle and ask this question.

Hi Brian,

Looks like 7.3.4 is not supported on 11i. It is still supported on 11.

Thanks

Re: Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i

Hi Brian:

We have Oracle 7.3.4 running on a 64-bit 11.0 K-class, OK, for what that's worth.

BTW, nice to see you here!!!

With my regards, Jim.

Hi

Have not done it but as far as I can see it's possible to run. And Oracle provides support for the compination, but thats on an EMS agreement.

Certification Note:
7.3.4 is supported under Extended Maintenance Support only.

Re: Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i

Hi there.
7.3.4 is definitely not supported on HPUX 11i.
You should really go for 8.1.6 or 8.1.7
. What have you done with the data of 7.3.4 ?
Have you got an export or just the old database ?

Re: Oracle 7.3.4 on HP-UX 11i

Hi Brian,

the real Oracle step is from 7.x to 8.x.

I would do this on 10.20 first, possibly
targeting 8.0.6 which has been one of the most stable releases ever.
For a xxGB database, this should take about maximum of 5 hours. On a fast box it should be quicker.

Reason: If something fails here, the fallback is just a restore of Oracle on 10.20.
If you upgrade the OS to a release that is not supported for your database, and turn out to take it back, you will end up with ignite or cold install 10.20 again (good point to check desaster recovery procedures :-).

Then you could upgrade the OS, and after that, depending on your target go on with

64 Bit conversion and upgrade to 8.1.7
or
upgrade to 8.1.7 and 64 Bit conversion afterwards (seems better to me).

The upgrade from 8.0.6 to 8.1.7 is a simple one, and may be even downgradeable to 8.0.6 again (not sure about this, but sure that 8.1.6 -> 8.0.6 is possible).
You will not be able to downgrade to 7.x, without export/import !

Are you changing hardware in addition, or do you upgrade the existing system ?
