If Oracle and Symantec (VxVM) supports VxVM Raw Volumes that are wholly contained on a physical disk or LUN (ie):
/dev/vx/rdsk/tpcdb/asmvol01 to NN
Is it also possible to use LVM Raw Volumes of the construct:
/dev/vg_tpcdb/rasmvol01 to NN. ?
each rasmvolNN will be on each own PV (physical disk or LUN).
I wonder if HP and Oracle have tried and validated this config. It should work IMHO but as far as support -- what could be the repercussions? In both usage of Volume managers, we're really only after Path Protection (DMP of VxVM) and (Alternate Paths/PVLINKS of LVM) that we're after and which Oracle ASM does not provide.
Your thoughts or if anyone has tried this ?

Re: Oracle ASM and LVM Raw Volumes
I dont know you are interested in serviceguard or not but below documents briefly shows different storage options:
http://docs.hp.com/en/9831/SGeRAC_BestPractices.pdf
http://docs.hp.com/en/8365/SGeRAC_10g_Sample_Config.pdf
http://docs.hp.com/en/8987/Use-of-SGeRAC.pdf
http://docs.hp.com/en/8988/ASM-SGeRAC-tk.pdf
For 11.31 you can use ASM over raw devices with full multipathing capabilities.

Re: Oracle ASM and LVM Raw Volumes
Turgay,
Sorry but I forgot to mention -- we're in a HP-UX 11.11 environment where agile device naming and built in multi-pathing is NOT available.
Our DBAs and our SysAds/StorageAds are actually quite becming accustomed to our VxVM + ASM strategy as it offers for the easier identifcation of disks. For eacmple -- it is easier to map cXtYdZ's to a VxVM DG and to an ASM DiskGroup.
Under 11.31 -- on emust have a record or table of the map -- say /dev/rdisk/disk1234 is part of ASM Diskgroup DBDATAGROUP1....

Solution
You can see some ASM over LVM configuration for hpux 11.23 and 11.31 on the links which i gived on above(i think it is also valid for 11.11).
Just one problem with ASM over LVM on hpux 11.11, you will not have load balancing, you just have pvlink feature for path failover.
