Hello everyone,
could you please give me some points that are necessary to be kept in mind when migrating Oracle database from HPUX 11i v2 to 11i v3 ? The idea is to migrate a Serviceguard integrated Oracle database from two vpars with 11.23 to two rx2660s running HPUX 11.31.
In terms of OS, I already went through the mass storage stack update and migrating to the agile device naming procedures.
Oracle-wise, some kernel parameters are different and I suppose that database reinstall will be necessary, followed by import of LVM volume groups that hold the datafiles.
Thanks,
Jozef

Re: Oracle database migration between 11.23 and 11.31
Shalom Jozef,
The kernel requirements are virtually the same between the two OS levels. There are a few new kernel parameters in 11.31, and more are dynamic, but you have a really good start taking the parameters from 11.23 and setting them in 11.31.
You will need to make sure you meet Oracle minimal patch guidelines for the OS.
You will need to do a clean install of the Oracle binaries into the new OS, which includes a relink.
Oracle and experienced systems administrators do not support update-ux.
Your last paragraph is spot on.

Solution
Hi Jozef,
I've been busy with a lot of moves from 11.23 to 11.31 of oracle database and application servers. NO re-install or relink was necessary.
Just present the original lun's to the new system and start it there.
11.31 does use more system memory then 11.23 I'm afraid.
Good luck,
Jasja

Re: Oracle database migration between 11.23 and 11.31
We're attempting to do pretty much the same thing. We have a pair of 7620's running 11.23 with an SAP/Oracle install and are moving it to a new pair of 7640's running 11.31.
Based on my research, it seems that you could simply move the LUN's over to the new machine and bring it up and it will work. This is because of the forward compatibility of the HP-UX binaries - anything compiled under even 11.11 will run under 11.31 without modification. Here's a paper on this here: http://h20338.www2.hp.com/hpux11i/downloads/HP-UX_Binary_Compatibility.pdf
But if you do this your binaries will only be using legacy features of the OS they were compiled on. To take advantage of the new features of 11.31, you should get a version of Oracle that supports this and reinstall/relink on that.
Essentially, this will work either way you do it. But your version may perform a little better if you reinstall a version specifically optimized for 11.31. Is this pretty accurate?
