Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
We are currently on HPUX 11.0 an Oracle 9.2.0.7
We have 3 servers production, development and standby.
We are considering migrating some/all of our servers to Itanium and running production and development from a shared SAN (EVA) and making use of Business Copy to do regular snapshots of production to development.
Will our PA-RISC servers be totally obsolete from an Oracle point of view ? I know you can migrate Oracle from PA-RISC to Itanium. Is a restore from Itanium to PA-RISC is not an option ? (apart from imp/exp that is)
Thanks
Mike

Re: Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
Its a different set of binaries, therefore the data is going to be slightly different.
imp/exp is certainly a valid migration method.
oracle may have a tool.
cold (database down) file copying will not work.

Re: Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
Copy of the datafiles (ONLY) across the environments may work. You will have to test it.
You must also ensure that the same patch level and versions of Oracle are installed on both servers.
Good luck!
kind regards

Mike,
There's a whitepaper that will talk you through the process here:

Re: Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
Duncan,
I think that the "Binary" part of the answer is correct!
You cannot copy binary files however the DATA files can be copied.
One feature you can also look into is transportable tablespaces.
kind regards

Re: Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
I would say no. I would think these servers would be useful until the day that HP stops support on PA-RISC servers.
Datafiles should be ok to replicate, but not the binaries.

If IEEE floating point numbers are allowed in your database, be aware that NaNs have different formats for quiet and signaling for PA vs IPF.

Re: Oracle in a mixed PA-RISC/Itanium Enviroment
The datafiles between PA-RISC and Itanium are compatible. You can simply copy the files, and you're good to go. Oracle even supports dataguard between IT and PA-RISC -- provided you are running 9.2.0.8 and both system are running 11.23. I've run data guard between Itanium 11.23 and PA-RISC 11.11 with no problems -- it works, though Oracle doesn't officially support it.
HP-UX 11.0 is starting to get a bit dated. Before throwing Itanium in the mix, I'd suggest upgrading to at least 11.11. There are some significant differences between 11.0 and 11i. If your hardware supports it, 11.23 would be better.
If you are using cooked file systems, you need to make sure that all systems have the same version of OnlineJFS installed. (Or whatever file system software.) While the data files are compatible, if the target host can't read the file system, you can't use business copy functionality. Or at least make sure the file system is created at an older revision that everyone can understand.
