We are currently running Oracle on a PA-RISC box, (L2000-440MHz/4way), and are looking to upgrade to a newer/faster server.
I was wondering if HP-UX & oracle are as stable on the Itaniums as the PA-RISC chips.
Any Comments are welcome
Thanks!

Re: Oracle on Itanium
You can do that.
You do however have a really fast box.
Per HP Bug (Doc ID: KBRC00003627) The default 64bit OS installation does not create a few required X library symbolic links. The following symbolic links need to be created:
cd /usr/lib
ln -s /usr/lib/libX11.3 libX11.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXIE.2 libXIE.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXext.3 libXext.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXhp11.3 libXhp11.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXi.3 libXi.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXm.4 libXm.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXp.2 libXp.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXt.3 libXt.sl
ln -s /usr/lib/libXtst.2 libXtst.sl

Re: Oracle on Itanium
On the heels of the 1M TPC-C announcement, let's just look at the TPC-C numbers for comparison (www.tpc.org)
Old: Jun 2000, 8 CPU HP PA-RISC 8600 550MHz: 60,000 (102010901)
New: Feb 2003, 4 CPU Intel Itanium2 1 Ghz : 87,000 (102121601)
Newer: Jul 2003, 4 CPU Intel Itanium2 1.5GHz : 131,000 (103073002)
So with the latests CPUs and latest Oracle (10g, not availble yet) the Itanium can do twice the work with half the cpu's. Not bad for a new kid on the block.
Application availability may be an issue, but if you are just running Oracle, the Itanium looks hot!
My own experience is just with benhcmarks (not real applications) in labs. We habitually use 4 CPU Itanium systems, even at 1.0 Ghz instead of 8 CPU PA systems (even if those were at 875Mhz)
fwiw,
Hein.

Re: Oracle on Itanium
My experience is also in benchmark too. Itanium2 is really fast, but remember to use HP-UX 11.23 (11.22 is quite slow and there's no VxVM 3.5 for 11.22, at least for my experience). If you're just using Oracle, Itanium2 is a good choice.

Re: Oracle on Itanium
you need to have Oracle 9. Oracle 8 is not supported on Itanium.
