PP405 Printer and HP-UX

I have been tasked to test an impact printer with HP-UX so that we can take the results and set-up and apply it to our clients. I so far have been unsuccessful. We have a PA_RISC box RP5430 which has 11iv1 that we are trying to send print jobs to a network impact printer PP405. The PP405 was distributed by HP but it is a printer made in Germany by Printer Systems International (PSI). I have attached an HP JetDirect EX J2382 but have not been able to get the default IP address changed from 0.0.0.0 to an internal one. My guess here is that the HP JetDirect is bad. We purchased a D-LINK DP-101P+ Print Server and configured an internal IP address to it. We were able to send a test page from a Windows environment but not from the PA-Risc box. I have installed HPpi and made failed attempts at getting a job to print to it. I contacted PSI and they guided me to change some settings which caused the test page to print from a Windows environment. Any ideas???

Re: PP405 Printer and HP-UX

Shalom Nelson,

I suggest you use CIFS/9000 Samba to print to the printer. It can be configured like any other cups printer now that you have the Dlink device. Hopefully the DLINK device is Linux/Unix compatible.

That in my opinion is your best option.

swlist -l product | grep cifs

maybe replace cifs with Samba in the swlist command.

Re: PP405 Printer and HP-UX

Normally when you see an ip addrss of 0.0.0.0, that means that the external JetDirect is set for DHCP and no DHCPD or bootpd is responding to this devices request because there is no dhcpd server on this subnet or because there is no entries for the devices MAC address in the servers bootp tables.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: PP405 Printer and HP-UX

Be careful with a general DHCP solution. The address may be changed if the power goes out or the printer is moved. Tell your networking folks that this box requires a fixed IP address. You can also setup your HP-UX system to be a bootp server and configure the printer that way. But the easiest is to download and use WebJetAdmin (requires a PC that will be running a web server). The WebJetAdmin code can discover the JetDirect card and configure it for you. NOTE: The J2382 is really old and may require a firmware upgrade. WJA can perform that task too.

Once you have a fixed IP address for it, then hppi will work fine. It's best to use an IP address for configuring the printer -- names, especially for printers tend to get lost in DNS admins and hosts files.
