Phone home ??

Is there a way to have the HP-UX (11.0) server call a regular phone -- like my phone at home?

Thanks,
Evelyn

Re: Phone home ??

What should the server tell?

Well, you can connect a modem and configure it for dial out ...

Hope this helps!

Re: Phone home ??

Shalom,

Sure, most of them have serial ports and you can hang a modem off them.

But all it can do is chirp at you.

What you really might want is an email to SMS interface that you can use to have scripts provide you an actual message.

Re: Phone home ??

You might look into this.

http://www.voicent.com/devnet/docs/perlapi.htm

I have also seen some people using asterisk and festival on linux to make calls. You might be ableo to setup a linux server and setup some sort of messaging from hpux to have the linux box make calls.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"

Re: Phone home ??

Thanks for the replies -- I know it seems like a strange request, but am being required to ask.

How involved would it be to configure a modem (never done it before)?

And, would my phone at home require a modem? What if I use Vonage - does that make any difference?

Thanks!

Re: Phone home ??

A modem on your HP-UX server can call a regular phone. However, when you pick up your phone all you will hear is modem noise.

I suspect the same may be true for Vonage as well.

What is the real problem you are trying to solve here? Having your server blindly call a phone number and make modem noise at someone is counter-productive.

Re: Phone home ??

The real problem is that I need to be awakened if there is a critical problem at, say, 3:00am. I do get messages on my blackberry, but that doesn't necessarily wake me up. If I can make my home phone ring, that will wake me up. I don't really care that it's just going to be noise. I'm probably not going to implement this option - it sounds like more hassle than it is worth, but have been asked about it, so I need to give an answer.
