Privacy from my children on my business computer in my home

I have just purchased a HP Pavilion 8565C computer and this is solely for my
personal business in my home. My children have their own computer, however I
have a curious 14 year old who loves to tinker with the computer and I know he
wants to get on my HP, especially since it writes its own CD's. I purchased
this computer a few weeks ago and it is still in the sealed cardboard box. Do
you have any low budget hints on something to limit anyone except whom I desire
to get on my computer in any manner. I noticed at Office Max a $99 device that
records one's fingerprint and it seems this may be the thing. Is there
anything programed already on this HP or does it have a lockable key like my
old computers used to have. Pleae send me your suggestions as I am not going to
open this until I have some method I can implement rapidly. Thank you for your
assist.

Call presales support and see if they can help you configure the CMOS Password
in setup at power on. This will require the user to enter a password before
the computer begins to start up. I know I have that option on my Vectra and a
couple of clones. Good luck

Re: Privacy from my children on my business computer in my home

Hi Thomas-

Hope you're enjoying your new computer, and
thanks for using the IT Resource Center Forums.

As a point of clarification, this "Microsoft" forum is a discussion area more
focused for an IT System Administrator as they deal with the Microsoft
BackOffice technologies (SQL Server, Exchange Server, BackOffice Server,
etc.). I'll admit we haven't done a good job of clarifying that up-front, but
we'll make sure to rename the discussion area in a future release to avoid
confusion.

As a point of reference, I would suggest that you try posting your question in
HP's Customer Care Forums. This site has discussion areas (with HP engineers
to help answer your questions) specifcally organized around HP Pavilions. Just
click on the URL below, and surf through the menus to get to the HP Pavilion
8500 Series forum.

Hope that helps!

Regards-

If you dont want your son accessing your system just install WinNT4.0 on it.
That way he will need a password to access the operating system and install or
delete any software on it. Setting the password in the CMOS usually just
prevents someone from accessing the CMOS and is a bad idea in case you forget
it.
