hi Sandy,
If you are really concerned about your database and re-applying of patches. Then one alternative would be:
Install the additional software in another ORACLE_HOME
just my views.

Thanks for your input and suggestion. I'll try this things on my development server first. And thanks the idea to test it on another ORACLE_HOME, I'll try that one.
