Problem Booting

Hi there --

I am attempting to install Debian 3.1r2 onto an HP Visualize C3600 workstation. The initial installation appears to go well, but when I reboot the system, the boot process hangs. The last line that appears on screen is the following:

sym0: no NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-40, SE, parity checking

Anyone have ideas on how I can fix this? Thanks.

Re: Problem Booting

Shalom,

Thats a PA-RISC workstation. You will need a PA-RISC distribution to install on it.

Are you sure you have that?

Re: Problem Booting

Hi Andrew,

I have no experience of debian, and only ever used HP-UX on PARISC, but...

From what I can see, it looks like you may have a SCSI issue. Can you give more detail?

Normally, I'd expect to see:

sym0: no NVRAM, ID 7, Fast-40, SE, parity checking

Followed by:

sym0: SCSI BUS has been reset.

What is your SCSI configuration (e.g. single disk, multiple disks, array, etc.).

Are they internal/external?

Is the SCSI terminator correctly configured?

If you have more than one disk, are they on different SCSI IDs?

Can you give more detail on the dmesg output you get before the last line...

Try disconnecting all the SCSI disks except for the one you installed on (unless of course it's an array, or you're spanning disks!)...

Regards,

Andy Bruce

ps Hopefully, I'm not selling you a red-herring! :-D

Re: Problem Booting

Hi there --

I did some further checking and it appears there is a bug with the version of Debian that I am using: version 3.0r2 and SCSI drivers. The recommendation was to use the official release, and that is the next step that I was planning on trying.
