Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Hi Folks:
Forgive me but I'm new to this....

I have a Compaq Proliant 1500 on which I'm trying to install RH 9....
I am get the message saying: "not enough RAM"

Here the are the specs:
Base Mem: 640 KB
Extended Mem: 162816 KB
Total 163840 KB

Can anyone provide a possible solution??
Thanks
Chris

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

According to RH9 Release Notes You have enough memory to install RH9.

Memory:

- Minimum for text-mode: 64MB
- Minimum for graphical: 128MB
- Recommended for graphical: 192MB

Source:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/release-notes/x86/

You can try to perform the installation using text mode.

Sergejs.

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Thanks for the quick reply....
I tried installing in text mode... but still got the same msg...
Could it be that it's not "seeing" all the memory and if so, is there a way to force it to see all the RAM availble?

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

A lot of older systems don't have contiguous memory and aren't detected properly. Check out http://www.cpqlinux.com/memory.html for some methods of specifying memory for your install...

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Seems your Compaq Proliant has a very old chipset-enforced "Memory Hole".

You can try to upgrade your firmware.

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

I had the same problem, and I also warn you that the performance is very poor. I installed RH9 by using the following boot parameters during installation:

linux mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=162M@1M

Look, I don't know if this is the exact parameter, but you should investigate more on the exactmap option.

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Tried to update the firmware... says I have the most current version already installed...

Looked at the other linked sent, but it seems I need to have the OS installed in order the check stuff.... Am I wrong?

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Did you try to update your firmware from maintenance CD?

P.S. Proliant 1500 supports RedHat 6.1 only ...

Re: Problem Installing Red Hat 9

Try by specifying only 128 MB

linux mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=128M@1M
