Profliant ML350 G5 SAS Smart Array P400 SLES 8???
Hi there,
is there a chance to install an old SLES 8 on this machine?
Sure, there's no support from HP to this constellation, but is it possible?
Thx & Regards
Marco

Re: Profliant ML350 G5 SAS Smart Array P400 SLES 8???
Shalom Marco,
Check the dates.
If the OS pre-dates the hardware there is likely to be difficulty.
That being said, the smart array P400 is a fairy well known piece of hardware that has been around for a while.
Its quite feasible that an OS install will work once the system has been booted and the P400 smart array has been configured.
Linux is not normally amenable to being booted on a raid 5 set up, a small raid 1 area is recommended at least for the /boot partition.

With a newer version of the cciss driver and the NIC driver compiled for your SLES8 kernel, it may be possible.

Never heard of this recommendation before. With a Smart Array Controller Linux doesn't have a clue as to what the RAID level is, or that there is even RAID involved. The Smart Array controller is presented as a block device and that's all Linux knows about it.

Re: Profliant ML350 G5 SAS Smart Array P400 SLES 8???
In this special case I have to start up with a SLES9 because of our new erp-software, so the need for an SLES8 is no longer necessary... (Happy Smile)
Thanx & Regards
