Question on Oracle 9i/10g and the HP SPI for Databases

We are on Oracle 8.1.7 and use the DBSPI. We have heard that the new management features of Oracle 9i and 10g eliminate the need for a product like the DBSPI. Does anyone know what the new features for managing 9i and 10g in areas like space management, archiving, performance, and roll back segments are and why you wouldn't need the DBSPI?

Re: Question on Oracle 9i/10g and the HP SPI for Databases

I just did a 10g installation this morning. Its possible to semi-automate backups and space managment with that database.

In addition, database defragmentation is done on the fly.

There is still some need to manage archive logging, performance and rollback segments. Otherwise why would we need the dba's?

:-)

Re: Question on Oracle 9i/10g and the HP SPI for Databases

Tony,

Some things you won't need it for, and some you will.

1. Instance monitoring. No way to do this without a separate product.

2. Tablespace monitoring. While it will make sure that fragmentation is not a problem, the tablespace can still run out of space, even if you use AUTOEXTEND.

3. Archive area monitoring. Logs put out on disk should be monitored, since this can cause the database to hang waiting for space.

4. Listener availablility (part of 1, but still important).

5. Alertlog monitoring. Some things you will get notification for from your application, other things will only show up in the alertlog.

Thanks,

Brian
