RH 7.1 Linux does not perform clean shutdown

Hi Everyone

Each time I perform a shutdown via Gnome or from command root I get the following:

general protection fault: f000
Code: Bad EIP Value
/etc/rc0.d/S01halt: line1: 1352 Segmentation fault halt -i -d -p

Has anyone encountered the above before?
I'm running Linux on an HP Vectra VL Series 4 -Pentium 100 with 64 MB RAM.

TIA
Pierre

Im not sure what is happening here. Which command is it that is faulting? Does this happen when you type
# init 0
or
# reboot ?

When I choose reboot from Gnome this does not happen. When I select Halt from Gnome the error message comes up. This also happens when performing a shutdown -r now
