Reading CDs recorded under Windows XP

I wish to read CDs on my C8000 (running HP-UX 11.11) that have been recorded under Windows XP. My C8000 is configured to automount CDs, (see below). It can read CDs recorded under other (3rd party) utilities on PC's (such as Nero, Sonic), but it cannot 'see' CDs that have been recorded using the Windows XP built-in recorder. Is this a Windows XP limitation, or is there some way to configure my C8000 to read XP-recorded CDs.
My C8000 is configured to automount as follows:
In /etc/auto_master, added line:
/media /etc/auto.local –ro
New file /etc/auto.local made containing one line:
cdrom –fstype=cdfs,ro,cdcase :/dev/dsk/c3t1d0

As you say, "It can read CDs recorded under

lie in the Windows built-in CD-writing tool,
rather than in the HP-UX configuration. I'm
normally a Windows-avoider, and I tend to
employ Germans when I'm "Burning ROM" on a
Windows system, so I haven't looked into the
options available when using the built-in
tool.

Not that I expect much benefit, but have you
tried mounting the CD manually on the HP-UX
system?

We are talking about the same medium types
here, right? Some old CD-ROM drives can have
trouble with (less reflective) CD-RW media,
but work well enough with CD-R. Unexpectedly
awkward file names would be a more plausible
complaint arising from use of a bad/lame
CD-writing program. Complete inability to
mount/read a CD seems (to me) to be an
unlikely outcome if the only problem is a
bad/lame CD-writing program. ISO 9660 has
many extensions, not all of which are
supported everywhere, but the basics are
pretty universal (even, I'd've thought, with
Microsoft-ware)..

Thanks Steven. Yes, I have tried mounting the CD manually on the C8000, same problem. Filenames are simple, 8 chars max, 3 char extension. I have looked at the Microsoft website, and they do admit that there is a compatibility problem with CDs recorded under XP, but there is a patch available, so I'll try this.

After years of watching Windows struggle with CDs, you can safely assume that Windows cannot create a portable (multi-OS) CD...it is likely a Joliet format or XP left the CD open (drag and drop CDs can only be read on the original computer that created them). There is nothing on HP-UX that will enable Joliet or other Windows-centric formats. HP-UX, specifically the cdfs subsystem can read ISO 9660 and (with patches) the RockRidge format. The mount method for a CD is to use mount -orr /dev/dsk/c-whatever- /cdrom. NOTE: The option -orr must be in your man page for mount_cdfs. If not, you need the 3 RockRidge patches.

Thanks Bill. This is what I suspected. Fortunately though, I have found that other PC-based CD writers (running under Windows XP) do produce CDs that are readable under HP-UX.
