Recovery Disk Problem

I have a 3 yr old pavillion desktop. I am trying to load the recovery disks onto a new blank hardrive. When I get to disk 7 and am about 90% complete my computer stops running the cd-rom and the screen goes blank. The machine is still "on", but I can't open the disk drive and nothing will happen on the screen. I have tried it twice and the same thing happened both times. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Recovery Disk Problem

Hi, Matt,

Which model Pavilion and was it XP originally?

Did you partition and format the disk first?

To install Windows XP to a new hard disk, you must start your computer by using one of the following media:

├в ┬в Microsoft Windows 98/Windows Millennium startup disk
├в ┬в Windows XP boot disks
├в ┬в Windows XP CD-ROM

Re: Recovery Disk Problem

Thanks Pat,

It is a Pavillion 523n that had XP home on it. Do I need an actual XP CD or can I just use the recovery CD's? The recovery CD's say XP home on them. When I rebooted I also got the error message hal.dll missing or corrupt. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Recovery Disk Problem

To resolve this problem if you are installing Windows XP on a hard disk that does not have an operating system installed, follow these steps:
1. Cancel Windows XP Setup.
To do this:a. Restart your computer.
b. Press and hold the F8 key on your keyboard.

On a computer that is configured to use multiple operating systems, press and hold the F8 key when you see the Operating System Choices menu.
c. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select the Return to OS Choices Menu option, and then press ENTER.
d. Select the Cancel Windows XP Setup option.
e. Use the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to remove Windows XP from your computer.

2. Start your computer with a Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition Startup disk, type sys c: at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

To create a Windows 98 Startup disk: 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
3. Label a disk "Windows 98 Startup Disk," insert the disk in your disk drive when you are prompted, and then click OK.
4. Click OK to quit Add/Remove Programs.
5. Remove the Startup disk, and then store the disk in a safe place.

Start Windows XP Setup again

I believe you can use the recovery disks.

Re: Recovery Disk Problem

I'm a little confused. Since I don't have a op. sys installed, how do I get into Windows and go to start, settings, control panel? I also went into Add/Remove Programs on another computer and I don't see a Start Up Disk tab. The only tabs are change/remove program, add new program and set access and defaults. Thanks again for your time.
