Red hat Linux box specification

Hi Guys,

I am planning to buy a computer and Install Red Hat LINUX on it.So I was going through few websites and came up with the following 4 models of system. I would appreciate if you guys could let me know your feedback which Specification model would be a good fit with in the listed 4 or else it would be great if you guys, could share if you have someother specification that would fit better

Hi

I have two RHEL3 server running at home, just for my home network (not a very small one, 10 computers all together)

First one has Dual P3 866, 1G PC133 SDRAM and a single 120G ATA133 harddisk.

Second one got Dual Xeon 2.2G, 2.5G DDR RAM and 3 36G Ultra160 15K disk in a RAID 5 configuration.

Most of the time, I do not feel the difference between these two, maybe because there are no much processes running.

Depends on what you want to do with this box but I think it is better to have a powerful system doing nothing than have a slow box doing too much.

I think RHEL 3 does not support PCI Express yet but not 100% sure.

I would rather go with .Dell Precision 470n: $1,146. It has got all good configuration available today.

Unless this is going to be doing very heavy duty serving, you have probably spend too much money.

If its going to be a server, make sure you pick a model that includes a remote management interface(extra NIC). This will allow you to gain console access from your internal network.

To determine your actual processing needs one question needs to be answered.

What are you going to do with this server once Red Hat is installed and running?

I would like to what is the difference between Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS and Red Hat 9.0

I am looking to configure a linux box for learning to simulate a server and also installing java and configure some webstuff for learning purposes.

I would like to know which specification configuartion box would work best for my needs.

I was just browsing through HP website and came up with the following configuarion box

As for difference between RH Linux/Fedora and RHEL - see this table http://fedora.redhat.com/about/rhel.html .

BTW, RHL9 is very outdated, Fedora Core (FC4 for today) is RHL successor.
I'll suggest you to start with RHEL4 or with RHEL free alternative - CentOS http://www.centos.org/.

As for hardware - if we speak about system for testing/learning - I'll suggest you to buy cheap entry-level desktop box.

For learning purpose all above machine will suit. Operating system which you are going to use is the side factor to side. Use Fedora core 4 or RHEL 4.0 in your machine.

Learning will be changed everyday so that just get recent configuration. It is enough to have work-station setup not as organization effect of servers.

I think "COMPAQ SR1020T series PC : Price $459.99 or eMachines T5010 Desktop PC $499" is enough. Install Linux there and breeth opensource air.
