Redhat 9 install problem on LC3 Netserver

I'm trying to install RH9 from bootable CDROM, all is fine until it starts to run anaconda and it detects the video card, not the monitor and detects my mouse. It then flashs a unreadable hash on the screen (typical of video card values wrong) and then displays a perfect redhat 9 screen with blue background. After this it goes back to text mode and says the the X server started correctly, then the next line says that the install finished abnormally. It then goes on to unmount and tell me its safe to reboot. This happens if I select either graphical or text install, however if I select text install the get an error of signal 8 after the abnormal termination error.
Any ideas anyone???
Cheers

Re: Redhat 9 install problem on LC3 Netserver

I would go for the text based installation.

If the GUI goofs detecting video or monitor capabilities your symptoms are common.

You should be able to configure the X-Windows interface after installation.

You will need to know your monitor and video capabilities and not set the system to exceed these. Just because the hardware worked with windows does not mean it will work with Red Hat.

Microsoft has more money to test with.

Can you tell me who builds the LC3 server. I'm not a hardware maven.

Re: Redhat 9 install problem on LC3 Netserver

LC3 by HP, it's about 3 years old.

From memory it's using a video based on the Cirrus Logic chipset (can't remember the model number).

I'd suggest using the Text installer as well however, and try configuring X at a later time.

The HP LC3 netserver does use the cirrus logic chip. I have tried both text and graphical install and both have the problem.

Re: Redhat 9 install problem on LC3 Netserver

Does it actually start anaconda, or does it die before that?

Either way, take a look at the 2-4th VTY's, and see what it says (use ALT-F2, F3, F4). These show some debugging information from anaconda. It might give you some more helpful details there.

Could you also tell us what you've got in this LC3 box?

from memory, they come standard with a 10/100Mbit network (intel pro100), and that's about it!

Re: Redhat 9 install problem on LC3 Netserver

Thanks for your help. I'll try the other VTY's. It starts anaconda, then does some screen checks by the look of it and then goes back to text mode and displays the message X server started successfully, then the next line says install terminated abnormally, its safe to reboot.

The machine has a Intel Pro100 NIC and 1 x P2 400 with 256MB RAM. Thats it.
