Replacing modem on XF145
In response to the thread: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xce04543254bfd611abdb0090277a778c,00.html I could not find a way for me to reply to my own thread.
The self service manual talks about replacing RAM modules, removing the keyboard, the DVD/CDRW drive, but nothing about the modem.
If you look at the attached image, you can see there are no tabs or screws to remove the modem, so I'm at a loss here.

From the picture:
It does not look as if there is anything there. I doubt that this is a modem bay. Looking at the docs I cannot see any reference to the modem being serviceable.
I still think a better option is to get a pcmcia modem card.

Yup, thanks! That's just what I did. At least it's still portable, but maybe not quite as convenient as the internal modem.
