Root passwd recovery - 11i

I am looking for a real good article or how to on how to recover a root passwd. I know you boot of the cd etc.. but I am looking for an exact procedure if anyone has one.

Re: Root passwd recovery - 11i

Assuming it's HP-UX, boot the machine, interrupt the boot process (when the message saying you have 10 seconds to do so comes up), enter hpux -is at the ISL prompt. You'll be logged in as root once you come up in single user mode. Use the passwd command to change the passwd, then either reboot or enter "init 3" to get to multi user mode.

Will reseting the passwd unlock the account?

Jeremy,

Is this a trusted system?

Re: Root passwd recovery - 11i

Hi,

Resetting the password will not unlock and account. You will need to run

/usr/lbin/modprpw -k root

Will enable the account.

Re: Root passwd recovery - 11i

Hi Jeremy,

As I indicated in the other thread, there is an option for you to enable "root password required on single user mode" feature if your system is trusted. If that is the case, then it will prompt you for root's password when you get into single user mode. You will need to boot the system from CD which is little bit tedious (because you need to remember quite a bit syntax) process. Please let us know if it is the case and we will post the solution.

Re: Root passwd recovery - 11i

@unixadmin:

Please don't ask "metoo" questions - open your own thread.

If you cannot logon as root, you need to bring down the server and restart to single user.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
