Note there are no Linux drivers.
That means overall there is no Linux support for this laptop. Its going to be difficult for you to get that card reader to work.
Much better to spend a few extra bucks to get something certified on Linux.

Thank you. I would imagine it would be better. As it is I was given this laptop and I have it. It did not say that linux was "NOT" certified. I did install everything without a problem, including the fingerprint reader - whatever that is worth.
Any other ideas?

Re: SD MMC SM XD Card Reader Not Recognized
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/53060/comments/4 has lspci output that shows that at least some nw9440 laptops have this card reader-
Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments Unknown device 803b
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 309f
That reader might work with the "tifm*" modules as described at http://news.softpedia.com/news/Texas-Instruments-5-in-1-Card-Reader-under-Ubuntu-Edgy-43688.shtml . The latest version of that driver is available from http://developer.berlios.de/projects/tifmxx/ .

Re: SD MMC SM XD Card Reader Not Recognized
Now on to the fingerprint reader. That "should" be easy, but since I can't even get into the BIOS, I can't see what type of reader it is. I think it might be AuthenTec, but I'm not sure.
