SNMP monitoring for HP UX 9000/800 11.23 systems.

I have been doing a lot of reading on line and in previous HP threads about SNMP and monitoring of HP UX systems. I am trying to monitor my HP UX systems with the Orion SNMP monitoring tool, but the default SNMP running on these systems does not give much information. No disk, or CPU. No detailed SNMP information. I have found the IEXpress net-snmp bundle software on HP's site, but the documentation is pretty much non existent on how to set this up. The bundle I downloaded and installed is ixNet-SNMP_A.11.00-5.4.1.2.004_HP-UX_B.11.23_IA_PA.depot. My question is what are the steps to setup this SNMP monitoring and turn off the built in SNMP monitoring? I want to add monitoring for disk, CPU, and any there basic sytem information. Does anyone have a step by step on this process or can they point me to something that is easy to follow on setting this up?

Shalom,

This is a standard snmp implementation and you can customize it to your hearts content.

Re: SNMP monitoring for HP UX 9000/800 11.23 systems.

Thanks for the links. I am not really sure where to go with these though. I am not that familiar with SNMP configuration on HP UX. I really just want the SNMP agent on the HP UX system to allow Orion to get information from it, but I wasn't expecting to do much on the coding side. Do these tools just run on the HP system and Orion can connect and get the information from the system? Sorry if these seem like elementary questions, but I just want to get more monitoring information out of SNMP. Can this be done easily or does it take a lot of trial and error?

Re: SNMP monitoring for HP UX 9000/800 11.23 systems.

Ok. I think the lights have kicked on and I am getting somewhere. I have iexpress installed and I am running through the README.hp steps to get it compiled. I have all of the correct tools loaded, but when I go to compile I am getting the error
error: mib module "snmp-notification-mib/snmpNotifyFilterTable/snmpNotifyFilterTable" requires module "snmp-notification-mib/snmpNotifyFilte
rTable/snmpNotifyFilterTable_interface" but snmp-notification-mib/snmpNotifyFilterTable/snmpNotifyFilterTable_interface.h or snmp-notification-mib/snmpNotify
FilterTable/snmpNotifyFilterTable_interface.c could not be found in ./agent/mibgroup

The find command does not find the file referenced in this error on the system. Anyone run into this issue before?

Hi Paul,

I'm intrigued - what are you looking to monitor? I use SNMP to gather various stats including CPU utilization and disk space usage and I only use the out-the-box SNMP that comes with HP-UX (which is based on the Emenate SNMP product). We don't use the NET-SNMP product...

So I'm sure what you are looking for is there already (provided you have the out-the-box SNMP stuff installed in the first place!).

I can give you some example OID's if that helps - although I'm not familiar with the Orion tool you refer to.

Cheers,
Graham.
