Samba version on Linux-server

Hello,

We are thinking about implementing a Linux-server as a member in a W2K-Active Directory Domain.
What version of Samba should I choose ? Version 3.0 or still a version 2.2 ?

What is the main difference between Samba 3.0 and the version 2.2 ?

Thanks,
Chris MARREEL

Hi,

Use Version 3.0 considering its mature ADS support.

Re: Samba version on Linux-server

1. Only Samba 3.0 has AD support. You can join Samba 3 server to an ADS tree as a member server without requiring that AD is running in mixed mode.

2. Main differences.
2.1 The perfomance between win2003s + samba 3 has increased compared with win2000s +samba 2.
2.2 Samba 3 has support for native Kerberos interoperability with Microsoft AD.
2.3 Samba 3 supports for secure channel (schannel) support, for MS NTLMv2, NTLMSSP authentication support and for SMB signing.

Re: Samba version on Linux-server

If you have a choice, go with 3.0. Even if you don't need ADS, as 3.0 matures, eventually support will be pulled from the older release.

You'll save yourself some upgrade work. There are a few bugs to be worked out. Since you require ADS, you really have no choice.

HP has created documentation on getting their Samba port to work with ADS but that does not apply to the open source version of Samba 2.2

Re: Samba version on Linux-server

Thanks for your input. I think we will go for a version 3.0.

Can you point me in the right direction for that HP-documentation ?

Re: Samba version on Linux-server

Chris,

HP Documentation on CIFS (which is Samba) can be found here:
http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/B8725-90061/B8725-90061_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/B8725-90061/00/00/13-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/B8725-90061/00/00/13-toc.html&searchterms=samba&queryid=20040419-051416

CIFS is based on an older version of samba though, 2.2 so your mileage may vary.

Robert
