Sendmail logging error messages

We are starting to use a Groupwise server as our relay server for our HP box. I was wondering if anyone has a good idea on how to handle the following problem...

We use to send mail directly out of the HP box. Whenever we had a failure, we would get a notification in /var/mail that an email did not send. Now that we are using the relay server, we no longer receive these notification on the HP box obviously.

The problem is that we have internal methods on the HP box for auditing successful and unsuccessful messages that use the /var/mail information. The mail.log file does not give enough information as it sees anything that makes it to the relay server as a successful event.

How can we approach a similar type of auditing/logging system on our HP box using the relay server? Thanks.
