Setting up a network printer via SAM
I am new to system admin and have been set a task of creating a network printer.
After reading tons of webpages and books on the matter, i tried to setup the printer using the lp spooler option within SAM.
The details i entered are as follows.
name : called it prtmis02 (Company naming way)
type : remote
remote system : printers ip address
remote printer name : printers ip address
remote cancel model : as default
remote status model : as default
the rest was as default
please can anyone tell me if there is anything else i need to do as i still cant get anything to print.

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
That should work but can you print to it.
lp -dprtmis02 /etc/hosts
What does lpstat -t show.
What type of printer is it.
With what type of card is it connected to the network.
Remember this is a BSD remote printer script
and the options are limited.
see /etc/lp/interface/prtmis02

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
Ensure the spooler is running.
Printers and Plotters | Actions | Start print spooler
and I've also sometimes had to check the "Remote Printer is on BSD system" box on some network printers.

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
A "network" and a "remote" printer are different. A 'network' printer has a controller that enable a direct network connection. A 'remote' printer is connected to another computer which provides the network connectivity. Remote printers are commonly used with LPD/LPR (Line Printer Daemon/Line Printer Remote) setups.
If you are using a 'remote' setup then:
remote system => the DNS name or IPAddress of the computer device
remote printer name => the printer queue on the remote system (e.g. lpt1)
You should generally toggle the printer as a BSD device. The remote cancel and status models should be left as their default values.
Regards!

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
As far as i know, the printer is connected directly to the network. when i try to install a network printer it says:
The HP JetDirect printer software is not installed on your system
(neither the command "/opt/hpnp/admin/jetadmin" nor the command
"/usr/lib/hpnp/admin/hpnpcfg" exist). Therefore, it is not possible
to add a printer that is connected to an HP JetDirect interface.
Can anyone tell me what this software does as ive not heard of it before.

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
In HP-UX only network printer known in sam is Printer that connect with jetdirect.
Other printer even it has IP and connect to network , you have to config with remote printer in SAM.
Now most of network printer in real world support BSD that is remote in hp-ux view.for your configuration :
remote system : printers ip address
remote printer name : printers ip address
remote cancel model : as default
remote status model : as default
what should be wrong is just
remote printer name : printers ip address
you need to find out from the printer manual
what is the port that the printer call it printer , may be LTP1 ????

Re: Setting up a network printer via SAM
We have configured different network printers in a system using several methods depending on the kind of printer to configure:
- ddfa service: old matrix printers attached to a DECServer or similar device.
- Jet Admin: printers networked by "JetAdmin compatible card".
- SAM: printers networked by NON - "JetAdmin compatible card".
I attached a document where you can find detailed explnation for each method. It??s written in Spanish but several images helps to undestand it.
Hope it helps.
