Slide show on HP-UX

Slide show on HP-UX

What I'm looking for is a way to mimic the MS Windows slide show screensaver on HP-UX, whereby the screen saver can cycle through the files in a specified directory and display them on the screen (either some sort of graphics file format or a PowerPoint file).

Ideally I'd be able to configure the location of the files on a per user basis.

Thanks,

Gary

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Hi Gary,
Your question , I believe depends on what interface you use , OR which version of HP-UX you have.
if you use CDE supported graphics manager maybe you have to focus on CDE software. OR if you use HP-UX 11iv3 with SIM via WEB supported go and find some adds 0n for SIM OR SMH software.
By the way did you try MobaXterm ? it is a good free of charge Xmanager software maybe you find a way when you check it in details ,who knows ?

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Hi Hakki,

We're using CDE. Currently on HP-UX 11.11 but soon will be 11.31.

Thanks,

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Do you want to work or watch screensaver pictures?

;-)

Most hp-ux systems (except graphics workstations) have very poor VGA performance, so you keep a system very busy by using such thing! Keep this in mind!

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Hi Torsten,

The idea is to display key corporate messages (e.g. HSE and Quality values) to terminals scattered around our production area. Hopefully with the terminals being thin clients, it won't load the HP-UX boxes too much, but you are right it is something we need to keep an eye on.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

For a thin client you need probably a local X-server or you use a screensaver directly on the client OS.
This will depend on the client itself.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

The clients are NCD NC900s which are acting as X-terminals, i.e. using CDE.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Hi,
apart from slide show screensaver, CDE has already choice of screen savers in style manager,
However, these take up CPU time on the system as already stated here.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

you can't just use xscreensaver? one of them in the package does just what you want, it displays images from a directory.

Re: Slide show on HP-UX

Hi Dirk,

Gorrr... I was so excited when you said that!!!

Unfortunately I don't seem to have xscreensaver on any of my systems.

Assuming you do, you don't happen to know where it came from do you?

Thanks,

Gary
