Slow printing between w2k and hpux11i

We have a w2k server printing via lpd to an HPUX 11.i system. The problem we are having is that sometimes the print jobs fly through the print spooler while other times the process delays a file of the same size for 5 minutes or more. What would be a good place to start for trouble-shooting and resolving this problem?
