SuSE Linux 9.0 on aLH4 with netraid 4m

Hy, i'll try to install SuSE Linux 9.0 on a LH4 Server with a Netraid 4M Controller in a Raid 0 and - in a second try - in a Raid 5. It is a manual installation and I load the megaraid driver manually. Then the installation begins. I can manage and change the patitions without a problem and the software installation begins. But after the first reboot, that the installation needed, I get a kernel panic. The mashine can't mount the root partition.
Have anyone a idea?

Sorry for my english

Your English is fine.

Wish your kernel was in such good shape.

Use up2date to upgrade to the latest stable kernel in the 2.4.x series. pick one with an even numbered last digit. Only use the 2.6.x kernel if the documents require it.

Sorry. I was speaking RedHat.

Use the Suse update utility to get the latest kernel. The device will have to be disconnected to boot the system. If you have no other disk, you need a newer Suse or a different distribution of Linux.

Check the documentation to see if you missed a step.

Re: SuSE Linux 9.0 on aLH4 with netraid 4m

Hy SEP,
thanks for your answer!
I think, I need no newer Distribution. I need a older one. The LH4 Server is a 6 years old server. If I install the SuSE Linux 7.3 there is no problem. But I can't update from 7.3 to 9.0. And a fresh installation from 9.0 brings the problem. In the time of the installation I can use and change the partitions and the software is copied to the disk. But after the reboot to finish the installation, I get the kernel panic.

Re: SuSE Linux 9.0 on aLH4 with netraid 4m

I had a similar problem with my HP LPr and LT 6000r servers with the NetRAID controller. SuSE 9 has two drivers for the MegaRAID: MegaRAID and MegaRAID-old. With the newer MegaRAID driver SLES9 would probe but not find and hard drives. But, if during install you select to do a "manual install" and manually select the MegaRAID-old module, SuSE will recognize the hard drives and complete the installation. However, after a reboot linux will be unable to see the root partition giving an error: "Waiting for device /dev/sda2 to appear: ..... not found * device nodes"... "no root device found; exiting to /bin/sh" because the install failed to modify the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file with a reference to "megaraid-old" (it will still be referencing "megaraid"). To fix this you need to go through the manual install process again and load the megaraid-old driver, but instead of starting the installation over, you can choose to boot from the hard drive which will allow SuSE to finish the initial installation and give you the ability afterwards to manually edit the kernel file adding "-old" to the end of "megaraid" in the INITRD_MODULES section. Don't forget to run "mkinitrd" to complete the modification to the /etc/sysconfig/kernel file.
