Suggested hardware for HP-UX 11 and later

I'm new to the HP-UX world and am trying to petition management to purchase a spare server that will run HP-UX 11.11 and newer. Since I don't know how much these servers cost I'll be looking on ebay first. Are there some server models I should focus on ebay and if not found, then what new low-end models should I look for?

The server will not be for production and will have minimal users and/or load. It's mainly for testing TCB, SSH, and possibly some X Window stuff.

Thanks,
Gary

The Itanium based machines will be the rxNNNN. These have the longest support lives ahead of them so if you are taking that into consideration then I would go that way.

Excluding that, I would look for L3000 and N-Class boxes to get you a feel for the OS and still be able to get the capabilities to use the box a bit later.

Re: Suggested hardware for HP-UX 11 and later

Any of the 'L' or 'N' series boxes would be a good choice as they are quite cheap. An A400 or A500 also would do well. I've avoided the later 'rp' designations because they will be more expensive on the used market. One thing to keep in mind is that no FWD/HVD SCSI devices are supported at 11.23 so that if you want to work beyond 11.11, you should specify all LVD (Low-Voltage Differential) SCSI devices.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Gary, you'll be looking for HP 9000 class servers current range is

I have a workstation a B2600 for this sort of thing which we bought from HP on their Renew program, which is second hand refurbished stuff.

If you are looking for older stuff that the current range the list of discountinued items http://www.hp.com/products1/servers/9000_discontinued.html

may be of interest.

Shalom Gary,

Some general information.

I am under the impression that HP-UX 11i v3, due this year is the last PA-RISC release.

If your future direction in production is Integrity Itanium 2 servers, then your spare should be the same class.

To accurately answer your question,I'd need to know what you have now.

If you plan PA-RISC for a while, then the rp3440 servers are very good for this task.

Thanks for the replies.

SEP, we don't have any production machines. I work in Tech Support for a small software company so the machines don't have to necessarily be high end or matching. They're only used for testing software issues. I just need to make sure it'll do TCB. In fact, now that I think about it, getting something diverse would be a plus and could be a selling point, but I don't know for sure what we already have. I'll do some more reading on the models previously mentioned and see if I can recognize something on ebay or try the refurb option.
