Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

When I "whois" any .ORG domain I receive the response: No match for "anydomain.ORG", while COM, NET, EDU, etc. domains work fine. I have the same problem with SCO and AIX, but not with Mac OS X or Linux. Any ideas why this occurs?

Re: Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

This data comes from the folks that provides the names.

I would check for .org on some other system. If it works there, then is a problem with the whois program.

It's probably the data provider, not you since its happening on several machines.

Re: Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

That's my point... the whois program included with HP-UX 10.20, 11.0, and 11i (along with AIX 5.x and SCO UnixWare 7.x) all have this problem with .ORG domains, while the whois included with RedHat Linux and Mac OS X work fine. I am trying to find out if the problem is with the whois program or if there is a configuration issue with the servers.

Steve,

Try this and see if this helps

Re: Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

As far aas RedHat goes, fully patch the box with the up2date function.

If the problem recurs, inform redhat via their website or the bugzilla database.

Same thing with Mac, different channels. Every once in a while what we find is a bug. Think one just went splat on you.

Re: Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

Sundar: "whois -h whois.publicinterestregistry.net" worked and is the same whois server that RedHat Linux uses by default. It looks like the default HP-UX whois server, whois.networksolutions.com, is not working correctly for .ORG domains. Thanks...

Re: Unable to "whois" .ORG domains

I cannot tell you about the whois in MAC/Linux, but there is a clear warning from the whois command on HP-UX

""The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .EDU domains and
Registrars.""

This explains why it was not working for .ORG domains.
