Universe DB Sizing - memory per user, and number of printers supported

Hi,

We are looking at moving from Universe on our HP9000 to Universe on an HP Integrity.

Can anyone share the recommended amount of memory per use that is required, or the number of printers supported by Universe?

I tried the Universe web page, but I cannot find these details.

Thanks
Andrew

Shalom,

This is information you can only obtain from the manufacturer of Universe. If their documentation is not sufficient, contact them.

Assuming all the versions remain the same, the requirements should be roughly the same.

Re: Universe DB Sizing - memory per user, and number of printers supported

Historically, Universe can be a big memory hog, especially with hundreds of users. However, because Universe opens a huge number of files per user, performance is directly related to the number of files that Universe can open at the same time. I believe the config parameter is MFILES. Since you are moving to a much faster platform, specifying a much larger memory chunk per user will boost performance. I would probably double or triple the amount of RAM in your Integrity machine. But as Stvene points out, only Universe support can answer these questions -- HP-UX can handle thousands of printers and users.
