Urgent Sound fragment problem

Hello everyone,
I am having a major problem with my laptop. The sound is fragmented and the laptop has generally become slow. So now whenever I play music in itunes or watch movie in Windows media player, the music and video stops for a fraction of a second and plays.. stops and plays for about 30 seconds and then runs smoothly for about 2 minutes and then it starts stopping and playing again. It is really annoying. It used to happen before too but I used the system restore to set the date back to 10 days ago and it became all normal. But this time, when I tried to system restore, it says it cant after it restarts itself. It is very frustrating. Can anyone give me some advice on how to solve this problem? It seems like a sound misconfiguration and it seems like minor adjustments here and there can solve it. I just need to know what I should do.

What type of laptop do you have and what Windows version?
