Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
Does anybody know if veritas DMP 3.5 has automatic lun masking or do you need to mask the paths somehow? I have an rp7410 connected to an EVA 5000 (VCS 4.004) & vxdisk list shows all paths to each lun rather than one path to the lun, i also have an rp7420 running 11.23 with vxvm 4.1 & it automatically masks the lun, is this a feature of 4.1?
Thanks in advance...
Aidan

Re: Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
Combining the alternate links and presenting only one device (pseudo device file with some DMP softwares) is not called LUN Masking, atleast as far as I know.

Re: Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
I meant path masking, is there any way within DMP of masking paths to a lun & just seeing one path? I think you can suppress paths in VxVM but i'm not sure this is the same thing?

Re: Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
Super. Finally an EVA5000 w/ VCS 4.004 *and* VxVM Full with DMP.
Did you check with HP (and/or Symantec) IF there is now an ASL or Array Support Library for VxVM 3.5 specificlly for EVA5000's that are active/active (ie. VS 4.004)?
I was actually hoping DMP would kick right in even w/o the ASL. I woul dhave expected VxVM DMP would use only one path instance (usually thelowest cX in cXtYdZ) and treat the other 3 paths as DMP paths i.e. in a sample vxdisk list of a cXtYdZ of an Active/Active Array with DMP and ASL:

Can you post a vxdisk list cXtYdZ of one of your EVA Disks that are configured in VxVM currently please?
Also, please let me know if there's an ASL already out. We're also planning to upgrade to VCS 4.004 in the near future so we can ditch SecurePath.

Re: Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
I looked at Symantec's Web site but could not find an ASL specific for teh EVA5k/3K with an Updated VCS4.004 Firmware.
You may however want to try using the EVA4/6/8K ASL (Array Support Library) available at: http://entkb.symantec.com/security/documentDisplay.do?gotoLink=0&docType=1000&contextId=25676%3A0.0&clusterName=Fusion&contentId=f29a2a9c-c551-4956-89cc-77ce6583868c&responseId=d8af2cbe5ed2bec0%3A1b1fbf4%3A1114c2aa4de%3A-54db&groupId=6&answerGroup=0&score=-1&page=http%3A%2F%2Fdocs%2F278428.htm&result=1&excerpt=Document+ID%3A+278428+http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.veritas.com%2Fdocs%2F278428+E-Mail+this+docum...
That's the direction we'll possibly head ourselves. EVA 5K/3K with VCS 4.004 are suppoed to be DMP/MP operationally similar to EVA 4/6/8K which are native Active/Active Arrays.
Let us know how your testing goes. The ASL works when your vxdisk list cXtYdZ will show the 4 paths.

Re: Veritas DMP & LUN Masking
The solution is to not disable the path. Doing so is a bad idea as you will not be PATH protected -- unless the user accepts the danger of running with just FC channel active.
The solution is to make VxVM DMP work so you get the most out of your upgraded / now -active/active EVA 5K. If it's not supported under DMP -- then we need to press harder HP and Symantec to provide the proper ASL (support Librry) so those sigthts that have Full VxVM (hence Licensed for DMP) can make use of the feature.
Note that using AutoPath (SecurePath for Active/Active Arrays) will not co-exist with DMP...
