Web Building Software

Greetings,

I am going to setup a webserver. My question is, does Linux have web building software? I dont really want to sit for many hours coding in html.

I know Windows has FrontPage. Is there an equivalent for the Linux OS???

Ps: Anyone know any good URL's on instructions in creating a website??

Thank you all...

Re: Web Building Software

Hi,

The best I know (close to Dreamweaver) is bluefish :

http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/

I suggest you still read a few things about html, it'll help you know what is possible, what is easy and what is hard... Here are a few links :

Re: Web Building Software

Jerome,

sensational URL's, thank you.

I see that Bluefish editor requires coding.

Do you know if OpenOffice (Writter) allows you to save it's docs in html? I know word in Windows, allows it thus doing the code for you.

Reason why I ask is that I want the app to do the code for me, if you know what I am trying to say.

Re: Web Building Software

Yes, you can save with star office (open office) writer under 'web page (html format)'.

You are right, it's simplier for basic page making, but be aware that thos aumatic made pages (frontpage, word, writer) are heavier than hand made pages, so longer to load...

hope it helps.

Re: Web Building Software

You can try Quanta. It's native and runs over KDE:

Re: Web Building Software

Greetings.

What about Zope? It's a framework for building web applications. Is that perhaps what you need? I haven't used it myself, but I'm going to.

Have a look at

You can download the book in pdf at

Re: Web Building Software

I have tryed bluefish, quanta, and also the composer in mozilla but I always seem to come back to bluefish seem's more simple to me...
but then I end up by editing the code and clearing it up to make more "human readable" it is long and tedious, and it does require to learn some of the trick of the trade, so as mention before need to read quite a bit of the html doc,

For small and minor ajustments once the page(s) is up I use the Mozilla composer

In short bleufish ... rectifie, clear code ...
then for small modification (like new links, images, updates) mozilla composer

I have not used openoffice to do web pages I find the interface hard to learn and long to load

once the page are created I try to test them on as many browser as I can just to be sure there is not to many difference, I am always suprise by the number of difference!

The whole process is a bumpy ride, but I get there .... just my 2 cent worth !

Re: Web Building Software

I dunno.. my preference is still vi :P

If you do need web building software though, what's stopping you from using a windows box, and then just transferring it over?

Re: Web Building Software

I do my websites the Stuart Browne way.

I use the appropriate windows tool and then transfer the resulting html/java code to the Linux box via ftp or sftp(better).

My main editing tool for wysiwig is mozilla composer.

For straight coding a powerful free tool is 1st Page 2001

Good tool, seems to be a built in purposeful error the with the
html command. The close isn't

If you do web sites you are eventually going to see some javascript/html or some hand coding. Thats the way life is right now.
