What is the purpouse of this users?
Hi,
Could someone explain me what is the purpuose of the users daemon, bin, sys, adm, uucp, ...?
Are their presence historical or functional?
Just curiosity..
Best regards
JGM

Re: What is the purpouse of this users?
A lot of those users are still functional, but depends from system to system. I think they are in /etc/passwd intentionally, so better not mess with them.
Contrary to popular belief, Unix is userfriendly. It just happens to be selective about who it makes friends with.

Re: What is the purpouse of this users?
Hi
These users are used internally by the system to give identity/status/permissions to processes that they own.
In normal circumstances one does not remove or modify them.

Re: What is the purpouse of this users?
I believe they are there because some programs/applications are started by them. For instance, many operations in Network Node Manager require the owner to be "bin."
