What to do with HP-UX while rebooting EVA 5000

Hi,

My knowledge about HP-UX is at the bare minimum, so i just had to post here for a few tips on this one,

We have around 10-15 hp-ux servers, patched up to the newest version, and a few EVA 5000 Sans. One of the EVA's are having a planned downtime this weekend, and i was wondering if we stop all the activity on the HP-UX servers while restarting EVA (So some of the drives will be offline), will these drives come back online when EVA boot's up? Or do they have to be unmounted while this is happening?

Anything else that should be checked after EVA has been rebooted?

It really depends on your setup.

If you have let's say LVM mirrored LUNs between 2 EVAs and you power one eva down, you can simply disable LVM access to this part of the mirror (pvchange -a N ...).


If you have LUNs on a single EVA you should at least stop application, umount and disable the VG.

But if the applications are already stopped, you can also shutdown the server.

I will see how it is set up, but as far as i know we can't shutdown the servers, since they run oracle db's on different shares, some that can't have downtime at all, that runs on another EVA, but are in the same volumegroup?
Closing down that Volumegroup will then also make the other shares offline. This is a very old setup that was made ages before we started working here, so just need to be 100% sure.
Any logs or output i can give you so you can see how it is configured?

If you have several LUNs from different EVAs in the same volume group, how about the LVOL configuration? Are they across the EVAs?

A combination of ioscan or better evainfo, pvdisplay and vgdisplay will help to get this information.


If the LVOLs are for example striped accross the EVAs, then you need to stop the application.

Wow, many LUNs and VGs.



Get evainfo, this makes it much easier.

Then compare the evainfo output with vgdisplay -v for each VG. So you know what LUNs are on which EVA.

First you need to get the EVA WWN from command view. Then have a look what device files are related to this EVA, then check which LUNs (in vgdiplay -v) are on this EVA in question.

Finally decide if you need to shutdown your servers.

That will take a bit more time.

But turning of the eva without doing anything (except turning of the application that have I/O activity on these specific drives) Will most likely make things crash and not come up again?

If the server is still busy on these disks you will get many error messages, timeouts, a slow system and maybe finally a crash. If any LVOL is striped across different EVAs you can even corrupt your data. So take care!

Hi,

If you are having a planned downtime for your storage the best method is to shutdown the servers which is connected to the eva for avoiding unexpected I/O.

Otherwise if you know the lun details using by the vg presented from the respective strorage. unmount the filesystem and deactivate the vg.

Before doing both these activity it is always best to have atleast the backup of vg vgexport) vgdisplay -v output and the luns wwn id.
So that after storage is online verify the lun wwn id and then activate the vg, mount the fs.

Like i said, we have more than one EVA, some of these servers are running other applications as well, that requires 100% uptime, so shutdown of the server can't be done untill everything else is done.

What about unmounting and removing the shares, and take them back up once the eva is online again? It takes some time, but i guess its the most secure and easy way?
