I have some queries, while installing oracle 8.1.7.

my concern is, the installer prompted me for the location of "/opt/java", and
I have selected the default, because it is not there is the present /opt dir.
------- any impact on oracle 8.1.6 here ?
Istaller summary:
Space Requirement:
Volumn /u05 ----- [ the one which I had selected for this installatin]
volume /oracle1/ Required 16 MB: ----- This is actaully starting poing of oracle home ( ORACLE_HOME of 8.1.6 = /oracle1/OraHome1 )
------- What it is doing in /oracle1 dir ?
Deinstalltion ( 2 Products)
-- Java Runtime Environment 1.1.8.0.1
-- Oracle Universal Installer 1.7.0.18.0

Re: While Installting Oracle in Second Home ...
First; the default for "/opt/java" is OK.
Second, the oracle1 directory will be used to install the software as you'll get a new oracle_home for the new software version.
All product version lies under same mount point. According to the OFA standard this should be /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6
and
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7
Seems like you have a space problem here (16 MB short)
Extend this filesystem and continue.
Last the deinstallation / upgrade of Java and the OUI has no impact

Re: While Installting Oracle in Second Home ...
One more thing in addition to the great input from Andreas. Do a swlist to determine whether or not you in fact have Java installed on your system. We recently attempted an install of 8.1.7, which couldn't continue until Java was installed. If you don't have it, it will be found on your application CDs (either 2 or 3 I think). 8.1.7 needs it for some reason.
Happy installing.

Re: While Installting Oracle in Second Home ...
Thanks Lot,
I need little more input, please
oracle1/OraHome -- is the home dir for ora8.1.6
I am installing ora8.1.7 in
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.7 but the installer is trying to de-install/upgrade some files in /oracle1 dir which actually belongs to ora8.1.6, so my concern was after installing ora8.1.7, would there be any impact to ora8.1.6, because I want to keep the ora8.1.6 software intact.
And I have check for java, which is not installed in the machine. How should I proceed with installing java?
So Please .....
Regards
Syed

Re: While Installting Oracle in Second Home ...
Last thing first; the changes made on /oracle1/ is probably in the oraInventory directory. This directory is put in place during the first 8i installation an is a "repository" of your installed product nomatter where later releases are installed.
But the java issue? During all my 8i installation procedures I never encountered having to install java prior to the Oracle install. The Java runtime should be enclosed on the CD's and should be installed automatically during setup of the runInstaller window.
Isn't the prompt for /opt/java just asking for where to put it?

Re: While Installting Oracle in Second Home ...
Oracle 8.1.7 needs Java installed on the box to install. I discovered this after one of the dbas came to me saying their install had failed because Java wasn't there (I apologize for not remembering the exact message). I simply got out my application CDs from HP and installed it with a mere swinstall. The install went without incident.
Hope this helps
Chris
