Windows 2000 (dual boot)for Kayak?

I attempted to install beta 3 on a second partition on my X550, and it hung
immediately upon beginning driver installation. I note there is very little HP
gear on the Microsoft HCL. There is an HP site offering a procedure to remove
HP drivers in preparation to remove NT entirely, which is not what I want to
do; it says in order to keep both NT and 2K, separate partitions are required,
which seems obvious. I was running NT/2K dual boot entirely successfully on the
non-HP box I traded for this one. However, it seems that 2K will not install
because it detects the use of or need for the special drivers. Now, the
non-administrator security has been tightened so I can't even defragment; maybe
that will prevent any further attempts at running 2K, even off network. Can
anyone clarify these issues?

When is it failing? What driver is it trying to install? During next install,
try yanking the NIC and skip the networking option (as much as you can). Do
that part when OS is up and running.

Thanks; I'll have to sneak into the office off hours to try removing NIC, as
I'm not on PC support staff. It hangs up almost immediately after the first
reboot, after accessing the files which were copied to the hard drive before
reboot. Another point where linux is way ahead; there's no need to turn on
anything which looks for the NIC until you're ready, and, yes, it crashes
trying to configure automatically here.

On my previous, non-HP box, 2K had no problem installing and enabling ftp and
printing on the local network, with absolutely no network knowledge from me
other than the path to the printer driver installer.

Hi Tim,

Try using a more updated release of WIN2k. I believe that RC2 is available
already. If you are part of the beta program try also posting something to the
beta newsgroups also.
