Windows XP Issue

I have a pavilion zt1175 laptop with XP OS. After rebooting yesterday, the system came up with the message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM. From what I've heard, I now have to completely restore the HD from the restore disks. Trouble is, I have info on the HD that I need. Does anyone know how I can recover files off the disk before I run restore on it?

Thanks in Advance,
Mike the disgruntled...;-)

"Intel inside" is not a label, it's a warning.
