cob64: bad magic number:

I am trying to compile some simple cobol code on a 64-bit server. The code compiles fine on a 32-bit server and if I change the paths to the 64bit libraries it just hangs. I am trying to rule out that the problem lies within the environment, patches, etc.? Any thoughts on some generic things to look at to help me fix this problem.
