Re: comparison matrix between windows and unix

Shalom,

Windows is less reliable than Unix.
Windows is hindered by an inefficient GUI.
Unix has 20 more years of experience in the server space than Windows.
Windows is more costly than most Unix.
Unix (HP-UX) runs on the most scalable hardware platform.

That is my five.

Re: comparison matrix between windows and unix

Hi:

If you are going to ask this, you had best ask your question *both* in a Unix *and* in a Windows forum. Answers are going to be biased to Unix here :-)

Re: comparison matrix between windows and unix

I think there are two major differences.
(This is a really personal opinion)

1) The admins. UNIX admins generaly have a different way of caring for there systems compared to Windows admins.
UNIX admins know they have a workhorse at there hands, and they care for it. And they are carefull with what they do to there systems. UNIX is not that much "shielded" from unaware admins. you can easily destroy a system configuration and loose your server completely if you don't care, so you better care and know what you are doing.
Windows admins know they have a nice GUI that they can play with. They trust the GUI will lead them, but there is no way to know what goes on behind the GUI. Windows is more "shielded" from unaware admins, you don't really have to know what goes on behind the scenes to be able to manage your system, so you don't have to be that carefull as with UNIX systems. You don't need to know that much in depth, which makes windows admins don't "love" there systems as UNIX admins do.

2) UNIX is an open world. You have your OS, and then you need to start looking for software from other vendors to run on it.
Windows has it all from Microsoft : OS, Authentication, Database, Mail, Content Management ... And because Windows is a lot more popular that UNIX, a lot more software is available on Windows compared to UNIX.

But don't forget Linux in your Matrix. It lays somewhere in betwen UNIX and Windows.
To my really personal opinion, Linux admins also love to "play" with there systems as Windows admins do, but Linux is less shielded and you need to know what you are doing, or you screw your system.
Linux is still a newer OS, with sometimes radical changes between releases.

And be aware : A UNIX admin that starts managing Windows servers, is most times still a UNIX admin with a UNIX attitude towards system management. It's the attitude, not the platform that is important.

Re: comparison matrix between windows and unix

Can somebody give me 20 differences between apples and pineapples? They are both apple's right? it says so in their name. *bzzz*! wrong.

Sorry, but this comparison is just silly. Windows and Unix are both OS's just like apples and pineapples are both fruits, but they are radically different in almost every way.

You'll find that out when looking for an admin, unix admins have a different mindset then windows admins. i have seldom seen a unix admin being good at windows (i'm certainly not) neither the other way around (i'm not saying they don't exist though, it's just what i've seen/noticed/experienced over the years).

a quick google turns up endless hits, like these (unix including linux);

Re: comparison matrix between windows and unix

Hi,

additional to Wim's:
>And because Windows is a lot more popular that UNIX,
>a lot more software is available on Windows compared to UNIX.

And there are also more viruses available on Windows.

From my experience (had to change from HP-UX to Win one and a half years before):
Users are playing more with the system (varaibles) on Windows.
Windows systems become slower with the time and nobody knows why.
Windows is storing more (useless) informations anywhere on the system so you need more and more storage space.

But: Windows hardware is less expensive ....
