Check http://www.linmodems.org
These laptops generally were not designed with Linux in mind.
What about Conexant's web siet.
AC-Link (AC '97) modems are primarily internal notebook modems, although some desktop computers may use AC-Link modems on plug in cards or integrated into the motherboard.

Re: conexant modem inexistent for Red Hat 9
Yes, you definitely need www.linuxant.com
Note that they are now charging a fee for the full-featured drivers, and only give out free a 14.4 version.
You will need to note down which kernel version you are running, what architecture it is built for (i686 probably) and which distribution (Redhat 7,8,9, Mandrake etc) With that information you can probably download a compatible rpm package of the driver, and install it with
rpm -i hcfpcimodem.version.etc etc
They have detailed instructions on their site. Good luck I'm trying to get my conexant modem working as well.

Re: conexant modem inexistent for Red Hat 9
Hello
I am not working for SuSE in any way but if you try with that distro you may find your Conexant "driver" as a RPM as I.
I had been tryng to get working a Lucent and a HSF Conexant modem in RH 8.0 and 9.0 in that order without succes until I realize that SuSE include rpm for both modems.
