db2 on hpux

I am looking out to learn DB2 admin on HPUX unix. I am not sure whether it is a good thinking. It seems usually people install oracle on hpux but db2 may be a good choice from job perspective because lesser competion will be there.

Would like to know the opinion of database gurus of this fourm.

Hi Shiv,

When it comes to databases, I think you should concentrate more on the RDBMS irrespective of the OS. The functioning of DB2 shall not be much different on HPUx, SUN or AIX. But in my opinion oracle will not be a bad option as its base is quite large as compared to DB2.

Having trainned on both will be a plus.

I think IBM DB2 and Oracle are very competitive trade mark in database world. Oracle has more
mindshare, third-party support, and features than DB2 does. DB2 is
slightly more primitive, but also simpler and cheaper. DB2 also has
some very high-end scalability capabilities if you're in the data
warehousing world.

If you look with gross eyes db2 and oracle
probably look about the same. But once you get much closer and start
working with them the differences become greater and greater.

AS for me, i've still a lot to learn on Oracle before i think to start learning other databases. Anyway, if you already know Oracle, DB2 will be much easier ;)

Hi,

I'd think that DB2 is more common in the mainframe world !
On Unix (any flavour), Oracle is probably no 1 but that's great to see someone open minded. Saying that I believe the last few benchmark on AIX were released with UDB (DB2) database backend.

fidn attached a document from Oracle comparing Oracle9i to UDBv7.2.
It's 3 year old and probably not true anymore for some of the features.
