how do i properly detect/configure my display?
i get some-sort-of a safe-mode [windows version] when i run X...how do i configure my driver for my monitor?

Hi
If you want to configure X Window system, you may use Xconfigurator or similar tool (depend on your distro.)
You should know the spec of your monitor and also video card before you start the setup.
But latest Xconfigurator detect most of the video card and you may want to try lower resolution for starting point.
But you must understand that incorrect setting of the X Window will cause damage on your display.
Good luck
