Our system time was off by 2 hours(too fast) and a post I read said to look at that file for some time information. I am a programmer so extremely new to this so not sure what I even should and shouldn't have yet.

The simple solution would be to use the "date" command to reset the local clock. Follow that by referring to this page -- http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Timezone-in-Linux -- to make sure your timezone is set correctly.

Are u managing the system as well ! and having the responsisbility of a programmer.

Even if you set manually there is possibility to get the changed again. Is that the single system you have. What about configuring ntp?
