Re: dump area function

Dump device is configured to take a snap-shot of memory information when the system goes wrong - which is used to trouble shooting-. Primary swap will act as the dump device in default. you may have to configure dump device separately if the primary swap is less than the amount of RAM installed in the system, otherwise only a partial memory information alone will be stored.

Re: dump area function

Hello

Normally swap (/dev/vg00/lvol2) act as dump device unless you configure separate device for dump the content of memory when system crashes.

In the next startup after system crash system save the dump in /var/adm/crash as files named crash.0 crash.1 etc.

Re: dump area function

Hi,

The other guys have given you a good
explanation. The dump area is configured
in the /etc/rc.config.d/savecrash or
crashconf depending on your level of
operating system. For a properly
configured crash dump you need at least
a minmium of 50% of your actual system
memory that is being used. Usually I
set up /var for at 2Gb to do this function.
As i mentioned above this depends on the
amount of memory being utilised.
