external modem

Guys,

I recently bought a laptop in which the internal modem is not yet supported in linux. I am planning to buy one external modem (mostly pcmcia). Any suggestions?

My distribution is Redhat 9.0

TIA,

Re: external modem

Any major manufacturer will be fine.

I've used US Robotics Externals with Linux, many models no problems.

Zoom has been good to me.

Lucent has been good.

External modems aren't winmodems so they are much less troublesome.

You might find drivers for your laptop modem at http://www.linmodems.org

Re: external modem

Thanks SEP. I checked almost all the availability for my internal modem. Linuxant told they wont support Broadcom chipsets. Broadcom doesnt even accept they are producing one. Dell is just keeping mum. Since it is the newest, the drivers are yet to be available.

Re: external modem

Good Luck then.

Dell can be annoying on these issues. I avoid broadcom whenever I can when buying Dell servers.

Re: external modem

Umapathy,

I use the Psion Gold Card PCMCIA modem that came with my Inspiron 4000. That was with an older RedHat distro, so should work fine with 9.0. I have yet to have a problem with it, it just shows up as a regular old hardware modem as I recall...

Re: external modem

I have used Xircom pcmcia network and modem cards on Dell inspiron with RedHat 7.2 and had no problem with it, having said that a external modem is not as light but you can attach it to almost any machine as long as it has a com port
and they are very cheap.

Re: external modem

Thanks Tony and Huc. Nowadays in the market I see only USB port modems. I tried very hard to get a serial port, but couldnt.

How is the peformance of USB modems. Any ideas. Because I dont want to waste for a modem that doesnt work with linux.
