filesystem restrictions for cloning oracle databases
Are there any filesystem restrictions for using snapclone to clone an oracle database? Can I build my filesystems with Oracle's standard of /d01/oradata/, /d02/oradata/ and still use snapclone to clone an individual database or does each database instance have to have its own set of filesystems?

Re: filesystem restrictions for cloning oracle databases
We clone databases all the time. We use standard vxfs filesystems, with largefiles enabled(HP-UX 11.00, largefiles was not accepted in 11.11). No special input with regards to blocksize, though that may impact your performance.
Depending on your controlfiles and or init.ora you can run multiple databses within the same filesystem. Once again, you might have issues with performance, depending on mirroring and other ancillary issues.
Oracle has some recommendations at http://metalink.oracle.com
If you are using a drive array, your manufacturer might also have input. Go with Oracle over the manufacturer, especially if its not HP.
We find that running our datbases with RAID 10 mirror, with seperate containers(virtual or real disdk) for each oracle instance provides optimal performance on HP D class hardware.
For extra information, if you are considering Oracle's application server, known as ias or 9ias, plan on massively increased database and resource usage.

Re: filesystem restrictions for cloning oracle databases
you don't need to go to metalink....
try this link:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/oscp.html
it lists out all the OSCP vendors, hp was a founder member, and all the certified storage solutions including snapshots from hp/cpq

Re: filesystem restrictions for cloning oracle databases
hi,
There should not be any restrictions.
you can also consider using RMAN to do the same maybe more effeciently.
