gentoo read only file system and root password

Hi
I am having few issues with compaq proliant PL1850R with six scsi drives. it is installed with Gentoo linux and rite now it is just loading the file system as read only.
I tried to load boot with knoppics but that was also unable to mount the filwsystem.

I tried to reset the root password on gentoo by giving the command at the lilo

e.g i have tried
linux single
and linux init =/bin/bash

it says cannot find linux single.

Is there any other way to change the root password, as i cannot boot from any bootable cd.
once it went into the gentoo and i changed the root passsword and that isnt working any more, neither the old password.
Any reply will be highly appreciated.
Regards

Is this using lilo or grub? Maybe your kernel label is not linux, try using tab for completting the name of the kernel, check your /etc/lilo.conf or /etc/grub.conf to identify the label for your kernel.

Shalom,

unmountable filesystems need fsck to try and fix them or its a lost cause. See what fsck can do for you.

Re: gentoo read only file system and root password

Hi
the problem rite now is that it is not accepting the root password.

i have tried to reset the root password by going into the single usermode but its not giving me any options even i press the tab for the kernel.

I tried to boot with the knoppics live cd to mount the filesystem and change it manually in the /etc/passwd but its not mounting the drives.

Another question is that the SCSI controllers on the motherboard, are they capable of handlling RAID?
or i need to use the RAID card which was in there b4?

Regards

Hold on a second..

Are you saying that these disks were connected to a RAID controller, and now they have been changed to the onboard SCSI controller ?! If these disks were connected to the RAID controller, then yea, get it back in there the way it was configured.

Given the age of the server, I'm picking you're using a SA2 series? These use the cpqarray module from memory (as against cciss), which most newer distributions (based on 2.6 series kernels) don't know about unless specifically told.

What you might want to do is use like a RH9 or FC1 CD (first disk), and boot up into it's Rescue mode.
One long-haired git at your service...
